Prepare a CV portrait for the application

This page is for people who have chosen to include a portrait in a CV. Expectations vary by employer and market, and a photo is optional in many contexts. Follow the application instructions and decide whether an image belongs in the document before preparing one.

Your appearance stays; the background and framing are yours to choose

PortraitDock prepares the background and framing of an existing photo. Your face, hair, clothing, and pose stay as photographed; the service does not generate a face or apply beauty filters. Pick the source image whose expression, lighting, and clothing you want to keep.

Choose a solid background with a HEX colour, or a linear or radial gradient. Then select square or portrait framing and check the head and chin guides. The selected background and crop shape the presentation, while the photographed person remains unchanged.

Keep the CV image clear at its actual size

A portrait format can suit a taller space in a CV; a square composition may suit a compact layout. Check the space in your own document and choose the format that fits it. Keep the photo's proportions when you place it, instead of stretching a square image to fill a tall box.

Start with the full head and shoulders in view. Use the visible head and chin guides to check that the face is comfortably placed, then inspect the CV at its intended size. A quiet background and clear separation around hair and shoulders help the face remain legible.

Prepare your CV portrait in four steps

  1. Upload one clear source photo of one person in JPEG, PNG, WebP, or a compatible iPhone format.
  2. Choose a solid HEX colour or a linear or radial gradient for the background.
  3. Select square or portrait framing for your layout, then check placement with the visible head and chin guides.
  4. Review the selected background and composition with your photo before paying; then complete checkout and download JPEG and PNG exports.

Choose a source that works in a document

Use soft, even light and position the camera around eye level. Include the full head, chin, and shoulders, with some space around the person. A friend can take the photo, or you can support the phone and use its timer.

Compare a few original photos at the size the CV will use. Check that the face and eyes remain clear, the image is sharp, and the expression feels appropriate. If the source is blurred, cropped tightly, or lit from behind, taking a new photo is more useful than relying on a different crop.
